Welcome to the 5th
grade where your child will encounter the following…. English/Spanish Language Arts: The various writing genres explicitly taught are narratives, literature responses, research reports and persuasive letters but, not limited to creative writing, poetry and summaries. Our students delve into at least three chapter books per language, as well as short stories from our Language Arts curriculum. Mathematics: In number sense students will explore the computation of very large and very small numbers, positive integers, decimals, and fractions and understand the relationship between decimals, fractions, and percent’s. As well as perform calculations and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication and division of fractions and decimals. In algebra and functions students will use variables in simple expressions, compute the value of the expression for specific values of the variable, and plot and interpret the results. In measurement and geometry students will understand and compute the volumes and areas of simple objects as well as identify, describe, and classify the properties of, and the relationships between, plane and solid geometric figures. In statistics, data analysis, and probability students will display, analyze, compare, and interpret different data sets, including data sets of different sizes. In Mathematical Reasoning students will also have to make decisions about how to approach problems and use strategies, skills, and concepts in finding solutions. Social Studies: Students will be engaged in the study of; natives in the United States and how the geography and climate impacted their way of living, their customs and traditions and their form of governments established, as well as the study of; early explorers and their explorations, the colonial era, the American Revolution and the development of the Constitution. Science: Physical Science: Elements and their combinations account for all the varied types of matter in the world. Life Science: Plants and animals have structures for respiration, digestion, waste disposal, and transport of materials. Earth Science: Water on Earth moves between the oceans and land through the processes of evaporation and condensation. Investigation and experimentation: Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations. |
